RESCUING NICARAGUA

Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the western hemisphere. It is a country that has been ravaged by years of political instability and war. Lack of infrastructure, industries, and modern farming techniques along with droughts, hurricanes, and unseasonal flooding, have left some parts of the country crimpled by extreme poverty.

Of Nicaragua’s 6.15 million inhabitants, 1,820,400 lives below the poverty line of $320 in income per year, 1,045,500 live in extreme poverty, surviving on less than $1.00 per day. 1,845,00 suffer from malnutrition, 4,661, 700 survives on less than $2.00 per day.

These unfavourable conditions have forced many Nicaraguans to cope as Homes are crowded with two and sometimes even three families living in one house. According to Habitat for Humanity, Nicaragua has one of the highest housing deficits in Central America.

A study conducted by The World Food Program shows that chronic undernutrition in Nicaragua affects over 40% of children under the age of five. This state of poverty prevents many kids from going to school.
